As expected, March was cold with the average monthly temperature 3.9 degrees below the normal of 40.5 degrees and was the 37th coldest March on record at Dodge City. This March was also the coldest in 12 years! In addition, March was the sixth month in a row of below normal readings. There has only been one month (September 2013) that has been above normal since June of last year. The warmest reading for this March at the Dodge City airport was 82 degrees recorded on the 30th while the coldest temperature was 5 below zero observed on the 3rd. The first of the month was exceedingly cold. The mercury failed to rise above 24 degrees during the first 3 days. Plus, on the 2nd the high was only 5 degrees which is a record for the coldest maximum temperature for the date and also for the entire month of March at Dodge City. In addition to the bitter cold air on the 2nd, there was even freezing rain and sleet with the single digit temperatures, which is quite unusual.
For the third month in a row, precipitation was below normal at the Dodge City airport. Only 0.27 inches was recorded, although other parts of Ford County fared better. Normal precipitation for March is 1.59 inches. Snowfall at the Dodge City airport was 4.4 inches which is a little less than the normal amount of 4.9 inches for March. For the season the total is 28.9 inches.
