A near record breaking June prevailed across much of southwest Kansas! Rainfall was abundant across Ford County with the Dodge City airport recording 9.09 inches of rain. This was the second wettest June on record at the airport (records go back to 1875). June of 1899 was the wettest with 11.17 inches recorded that year. Going back 100 years this June was the second wettest of ANY month at the airport. July 1962 had 9.13 inches which is the wettest month this past century. Rainfall around the Dodge City area was even greater this past month with Mariah Hills golf course recording 11.29 inches. At the airport there was at least a trace of rain on 17 days!
Temperatures at Dodge City were never too extreme with the highest reading of 98 degrees observed on the 17th. The coolest temperature was 52 degrees on the 13th. The coolest day was on the 9th when the low was 53 and the high was only 63 degrees. The monthly average for this June was 74.1 degrees which is only 0.2 degrees above average. It is interesting that this past month was the 7th June with normal to above normal temperatures in a row at the Dodge City airport.
The average wind speed for June at the airport was 14.6 MPH which was above the normal of 13.5 MPH. It is also the 4th June in a row with above normal average wind. The strongest wind reported at the Dodge City airport for June was 66 MPH which occurred on the 1st as a severe thunderstorm moved through.
