Unlike the past few years, July was characterized by periods of typical summer weather but also had episodes of anomalously cool weather. The highlight was the abnormally cold stretch of temperatures from July 15 through July 18. At the Dodge City airport the mercury failed to warm above 75 degrees for 4 straight days! There was only one other time in the record book at Dodge City that the mercury failed to get above 75 for four consecutive days during July. That occurred in 1895 from July 8 through 11.
The two coldest days this past July were the 16th and 17th when the high was only 63 and 62 respectively. That average two day high of 62.5 degrees is the coldest on record for July at Dodge City. The previous record was 64.5 degrees which occurred July 10 and 11 in 1895. There were 4 daily temperature records set during the month. The high of 63 and 62 degrees mentioned earlier were daily records for minimum high temperatures. The high of 71 on the 30th tied 1881 as a minimum high temperature. Finally the low of 53 at the Dodge City airport on the 15th was a record low temperature. There were just a couple of days of “hot” weather. It reached 102 degrees on the 25th and 26th and are the only two days that the century mark has been reached this year at Dodge City.
