September 2014 Weather Summary for Dodge City

The weather across Ford County and the Dodge City area during September experienced several extremes in temperatures and precipitation. Some areas of the county south of Dodge City only received about an inch of rain while a few locations across the northern part of the county received over 3 inches of rainfall. At the Dodge City airport there was 1.66 inches of rain for the month which is only 0.01 inches less than the climatological normal.

Temperatures during the month made some wild swings. While the hottest day was 100 degrees on the 9th, the mercury fell to 35 degrees on the morning of the 13th. This is also the earliest in the fall that the mercury has reached 35 degrees or colder at the Dodge City airport. Three records were tied or broken. The 35 degrees was a record low temperature for the date. The 100 degree reading tied for the hottest temperature for the 9th of September. The high temperature of only 52 degrees on the 12th tied 1989 for the coldest high temperature for that date.

For the month the average daily temperature was 69.6 and was 0.4 degrees above normal. In addition the 100 degree reading on the 9th was the 6th time this year and is significantly less than the past several years.

The average wind speed for September at the Dodge City airport was 12.8 MPH and was slightly less than the normal speed of 13.2 MPH. The strongest wind occurred on the 23rd with a thunderstorm when the wind reached 48 MPH.
