October 2014 Weather Summary for Dodge City

The weather across Ford County and the Dodge City area during October experienced several extremes in temperatures and precipitation, just as we saw during September.  The highlight might of been the very warm temperatures during the last part of the month.  At the Dodge City airport the high temperature on the 25th reached 90 degrees which set a new record for the date.  It was also the second latest that 90 degrees has been reached during the fall.  The latest 90 degree temperature at Dodge City in the record books (since 1875) occurred on November 8, 1980 when the mercury reached 91 degrees.  Some folks may have remembered that day as it was the opening weekend of pheasant season.  There were 2 records set at Dodge City during October.  Along with the 90 degree day mentioned, the high on the 26th tied the record for that date.  The average temperature for the month was 59.7 degrees, 3.1 degrees above normal, and was also the 24th warmest October on record.  The warmest October on record at Dodge City was 66.5 degrees set back in 1963.  The coldest reading during this October at the Dodge City airport was 31 degrees recorded on the 31st.

Precipitation at the Dodge airport for October was 2.14 inches and was 0.40 inches above normal.  It's kind of hard to believe but that is only the second month this year that precipitation was above normal, given how green and wet it's been (thanks in part to the very wet June).  So far for 2014 there has been 22.03 inches measured at the airport.

The average wind speed for the month was 11.3 MPH which was significantly less than the normal speed of 13.0 MPH.  The highest wind recorded at the airport was 55  MPH observed on the 13th.  It is worth nothing that this was the 4th month in a row with below normal winds at Dodge City.
