November 2014 Weather Summary for Dodge City

This November saw some wild weather swings across the Dodge City area and all of southwest Kansas.  The most notable was the rapid transition from a relatively mild fall to winter like conditions early in the month.  The second wild swing occurred towards the end of November when unseasonably and record setting warmth was displaced by another shot of cold air.

For Dodge City the average temperature for November was 40.0 degrees at the airport.  This was 3.1 degrees below normal.  The warmest reading at Dodge City for the month occurred on the 10th when the mercury reached 80 degrees early in the afternoon.  However a "Blue Norther" brought a rapid decent in the mercury as the temperature had fallen to 22 by midnight and all the way to 16 by the following morning!  The 7 day stretch from the 11th through 17th saw very cold temperatures.  The average during that span was 22.6 degrees below normal!  The high of only 19 degrees at the Dodge City airport on the 12th was a record low-high for the date.  The previous reading of 23 degrees occurred in 1940.   Warm weather returned by the end of the month.  The high of 78 on the 28th and 79 degrees on the 29th were both record high temperatures for Dodge City.  The combined two day total was the 3rd warmest for late November.

Precipitation was sparse for November.  Only 0.15 inches was recorded at the airport and was 0.61 inches below normal.  There was 2.2 inches of snow at the Dodge City airport (slightly above normal) although there was 3 to 3 1/2 inches in town.  This fell late on the 15th and into early on the 16th.

The wind for the month was above normal.  The average speed for November was 13.7 MPH.  The highest wind speed measured at the airport was 57 MPH which was observed on the 23rd.
