January 2015 Weather Summary For Dodge City

Below normal temperatures dominated the first 13 days of January at the Dodge City Regional Airport with an average of 22.3 degrees, which was 9.7 degrees below normal.  However, Dodge City experienced the warmest second half of January on record with an average temperature of 43.1 degrees from the 16th to the 31st.  This was 10.7 degrees above normal.  Dodge City also had the warmest three day stretch for January on record with an average of 56.0 degrees from the 26th to the 28th.  The second warmest was 53.2 degrees from January 6th  through January 8th way back in 1876.  Records for January date back to 1875.
The average temperature for January 2015 was 33.9 degrees, which was 1.7 degrees above normal.  The average high temperature was 46.1 degrees and the average low was 21.6 degrees.  Only one daily record was set and that was a high 80 degrees on the 27th, which broke the previous record of 70 in 2002 and 2003.  This also tied the warmest temperature on record for January that was set on January 31st in 1989.  Two highest minimum temperatures were tied on the 27th and 28th with lows of 37 and 42, respectively.

The total precipitation for the month was 0.66 inches, which was 0.08 inches above normal.  The highest 24 hour total was 0.34 inches on the 30th and 31st.  The total snowfall for the month at the airport was 4.5 inches, which was 0.4 inches below normal.  The highest 24 hour total was 3.3 inches on the 3rd.  Much more snow was reported in town and the western part of Ford County.  The total snowfall for the 2014-15 season was 10.5 inches and that was 0.7 inches below normal.

The average wind speed for the month was 11.8 mph.  The highest wind gust was 48 mph from the north on the 3rd.
