September 2008 Weather Summary for Dodge City

The average temperature for September 2008 for the Dodge City Regional Airport was 67.6 degrees, which was 1.7 degrees below normal.  The average high temperature was 79.0 degrees and the average low was 56.1 degrees.  The highest temperature was 91 degrees on the 1st and 26th and the lowest was 44 degrees on the 15th and 30th.  A record lowest maximum temperature was set on the 6th with a high of 60 degrees.  The previous record for that day had been 65 in 1993.  No other records were set during the month.

Precipitation for September 2008 was slightly above normal.  The total was 1.89 inches, which was 0.19 inches above the norm.  The highest 24 hour amount was 1.30 inches on the 5th and 6th.  The total precipitation from January 2008 to September 2008 was 12.95 inches, which was 6.17 inches below normal.  January 2008 through September 2008 was the 28th driest on record for that time period. The driest period was  1991 with 7.82 inches.

The average wind speed was 12.6 mph.  The highest wind gust was 48 mph from the west on the 5th.  The amount of sunshine for the month was 64 percent.

For much of western and south central Kansas, rainfall varied greatly during the month of September.  Parts of Kearny county only received a trace of rainfall for the entire month while parts of Barber county received over 10 inches of rainfall!  Even in just Kearny county rainfall varied considerably.  For instance, in the northern part of the county there was a little over 4 inches while other areas near Lakin received only a trace of rain.
