October 2008 Weather Summary for Dodge City

The Dodge City Regional Airport established a record 5.00 inches of precipitation for October 2008.  This broke the previous record of 4.94 inches back in 1997.  Records date all the way back to 1874 for Dodge City.  October 2008 was 3.55 inches above normal.  The highest 24 hour amount was 2.02 inches on the 12th.  Dodge City is still well below normal for the year.  The January to October total was 17.95 inches, which was 2.62 inches below normal.  The last time this much precipitation fell during a month was July 2004 when there was 5.20 inches.  There was only a trace of snow for the month and that occurred on the 23rd.

The average temperature for October 2008 was 57.2 degrees and that was 0.1 degree below normal.  The average high temperature was 69.5 degrees and the average low was 44.8 degrees.  The highest temperature was 92 degrees on the 4th and the lowest was 28 on the 27th.  No records were set during the month.

The average wind speed was 13.7 mph.  The highest wind gust was 62 mph from the northwest on the 21st when thunderstorms moved through the area.   The 22nd and 23rd  saw  strong northwest winds  with  average speeds of  26 mph and  gusts to around 50 mph.  The amount of sunshine for the month  was 70 percent.
