December 2008 Weather Summary for Dodge City

December 2008 was another dry month at the Dodge City Regional Airport.  Only 0.15 inches of precipitation fell during the month and that was 0.62 inches below normal.  The yearly precipitation total ended with 18.29 inches and that was 4.06 inches below normal.  This was the 44th driest year on record, with records dating back to 1874.  The greatest 24 hour amount in December was on the 8th and 9th with 0.11 inches.  A total of 1.2 inches of snow fell during the month, which is also the seasonal total.  That is five inches below normal.  A year ago the total was 16.2 inches! 

The average temperature for December 2008 was 32.6 degrees, which was 0.5 degrees below normal.  The average high temperature was 45.9 degrees and the average low was 19.4.  The maximum temperature was 72 on the 2nd and the minimum was 1 above zero on the 15th.   Only one record was set during the month, and that was for a lowest maximum temperature on the 15th with a high of only 11 degrees.  The average temperature for the year was 55.1 degrees and that was only 0.1 degrees below normal.  This was the 53rd warmest year on record.  The warmest was 58.6 in 1934 and the coldest was 51.6 in 1884.

The average wind speed was 14.0 mph.  The highest wind gust was 55 mph from the north on the 3rd.  The amount of sunshine for the month was 58 percent.
