February 2009 Weather Summary for Dodge City

February 2009 precipitation was well below normal again for the Dodge City Regional Airport.  A total of 0.18 inches of precipitation was recorded for the month and this was 0.48 inches below normal.  The total for the year is only 0.20 inches and that is 1.08 inches below normal.  Since November 1, 2008 there has only been 0.54 inches.  November 2008 through February 2009 is the sixth driest November through February period on record.  Records date back to 1874.  The last time it was this dry was 1969-1970 when there was 0.35 inches.  You have to go back to November 1875 to February 1876 for the driest with 0.15 inches recorded. 

Only a trace of snow fell in February 2009 and that was on the 11th and 27th.  The total snowfall for the season was only 3.2 inches and that is 12.3 inches below normal.  Last year at the same time there was 20.7 inches.  The last time there was less snow through the end of February was during the 1969-1970 season when there was 0.9 inches.  However, in March 1970 there was a total of 24 inches of snow. For the last 13 months going back to February 2008 there has only been 4.2 inches.

Temperatures during February were well above normal with an average of 40.6 degrees, which was 4.6 degrees above normal.  The average high temperature was 57.1 degrees and the average low was 24.0 degrees.  The highest temperature was 82 degrees on the 6th and the lowest was 10 degrees on the 14th, 15th and 28th.  Only one record was set and that was a maximum temperature of 82 on the 6th which broke the previous record of 69. 

The average wind speed was 12.8 mph.  The highest wind gust was 58 mph from the north on the 20th.  The amount of sunshine for the month was 79 percent.
