June 2009 Weather Summary for Dodge City

There was a lot of rainfall in June 2009 for the Dodge City Regional Airport.  Most of the rain fell during the first 15 days of the month.  There was a total of 6.34 inches recorded, which was 3.19 inches above normal.  This was the 9th wettest June on record.  The wettest was in 1899 with 11.17 inches of rain.  The highest 24 hour amount was 1.83 inches on the 1st and 2nd. Almost all of it (1.81 inches) was on the 1st.  Total precipitation since January 1st was 12.11 inches and this was 0.59 inches above normal.  At this time last year there was only 8.03 inches.  In addition to the rainfall, large hail fell at Dodge City late in the afternoon on June 15th with golf ball size hail reported.  There was also a tornado just south of the city visible to the National Weather Service office.  

The average temperature for the month was 74.9 degrees and this was 0.6 degrees above normal.  The average high temperature was 87.4 degrees and the average low was 62.3.  No records were set during the month.  The highest temperature was 98 degrees on the 6th and again on the 17th.  The lowest temperature was 50 degrees on the 8th.

The average wind speed was relatively light at 10.4 mph.  The highest wind gust was 62 mph from the west on the 15th during the time thunderstorms moved through the city.  The amount of sunshine for the month was 76 percent.
