August 2009 Weather Summary for Dodge City

With June and July being above normal for precipitation, August ended up below normal.  Total precipitation for the month at the Dodge City Regional Airport was 1.73 inches and that was one inch below normal.  Most of the precipitation was in the middle of the month.  The greatest 24 hour amount was 1.21 inches on the 18th.  The total precipitation from January 1st through August 31st was 18.13 inches, which was 0.71 inches above normal.  At this time last year there was only 11.06 inches of precipitation. 

The average temperature for the month was 75.6 degrees and that was 2.6 degrees below normal.  The average high temperature was 89 degrees and the average low was 62.1 degrees.  There were four days that reached 100 degrees.  The warmest day was 101 on the 8th.  The total number of 100 degree days was 10 for this summer.  The lowest temperature was 52 on the 30th.  There was one record set in August and that was a record low on the 17th with a reading of 56 degrees.

The average wind speed was 12.1 mph.  The highest wind gust was 55 mph from the northwest on the 6th from thunderstorms that moved through the area that morning.  The amount of sunshine for the month was 88 percent.
