Heavy Snow in Southwestern Kansas January 28-29, 2010

A strong winter storm system moved out into the Southern Plains yesterday, bringing snow and freezing rain to much of the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma.  Southwestern Kansas was on the edge of this system, and snow held off for the first part of the day as dry surface air remained in place.  However, by mid afternoon, a strong band of snow began to develop over the region, and snow finally started to reach the ground.  Heavy snow continued to fall across Southwestern Kansas through the late afternoon and evening, gradually moving into South Central Kansas by Friday morning.  The heaviest snow amounts lined up roughly along the US Highway 50 corridor:

 

This shows the totals through 6 AM, and snow was still falling in portions of South Central Kansas into Friday Morning.  The heaviest snow report was from Ingalls and Kinsley which both received 11 inches of accumulation.  A summary of the heaviest snow amounts as they were coming in can be seen below.
