May 2010 Weather Summary for Dodge City

Temperatures were below normal for the month of May at the Dodge City Regional Airport.  The average temperature was 62.1 degrees, which was 1.7 degrees below normal.  The average high temperature was 74.8 degrees and the average low was 49.4.  The highest temperature was 90 degrees on the 6th and 29th and the lowest was 32 degrees on the 8th.  The low of 32 on the 8th established a record low for that date.  One other record that was set was for a highest minimum temperature on the 23rd when the low only got down to 68 degrees.

May 2010 was the 28th wettest May on record for Dodge City.  A total of 4.04 inches of precipitation fell during the month, which was 1.04 inches above normal.  The highest 24 hour amount was 1.82 inches on the 11th and 12th.  All of that rain came within a two hour period around midnight.  Hail as large as golfballs accompanied the thunderstorm that brought the rain.  The total precipitation from January 1st 2010 through May 31st 2010 was 7.60 inches, which was 0.77 inches below normal.

The average wind speed was 13.2 mph.  The highest wind gust was 54 mph from the southeast on the 19th.  This gust was in the wake of a thunderstorm.
