January 2011 Weather Summary for Dodge City

The average temperature for January 2011 at the Dodge City Regional Airport was 29.5 degrees, which was 0.6 degrees below normal.  The coldest stretch was from the 10th to the 12th when temperatures did not rise above 25 degrees.  The low on the 11th was 5 below zero and on the 12th it was 4 below.  The end of the month saw some very mild temperatures with highs of 71 and 70 on the 28th and 29th, respectively.  Arctic air moved into the area on the31st which continued into the first few days of February.  The average high for the month was 42.5 degrees and the average low was 16.5 degrees.  The highest temperature was 71 degrees on the 28th and the lowest was 5 below zero on the 11th.  No records were set during the month.

The total precipitation was 0.34 inches, which was 0.28 inches below normal.  The greatest 24 hour amount was 0.18 inches on the 17th.  A total of 1.8 inches of snow fell during the month, which was 3.1 inches below normal.  The highest 24 hour amount was 1.4 inches on the 9th and 10th.  The total snowfall for the 2010-11 season as of January 31st was 4.1 inches.  This is the 29th driest September through January on record for snowfall tied with 1967-68.  The driest on record is 0.1 inches in the 1922-23 season. 

The average wind speed for the month was 10.5 mph.  The highest wind gust was 49 mph from the north on the 31st.
