Wind Damage in Liberal on 23 July, 2011

Thunderstorms developed during the afternoon hours on 23 July and generated microbursts that produced damaging winds in southwest and south central Kansas. Thunderstorm outflow winds and microbursts occurred on the west side of Liberal around 535 PM on 23 July and caused damage to structures just east of the Liberal Airport. The Liberal AWOS measured a peak wind of 52 mph at 535 PM. Evidence of two microbursts was found during a damage survey conducted on 24 July. The microbursts were superimposed on west outflow winds of 40 to 50 mph as the thunderstorms moved into Liberal.

Probable microburst locations based on damage observed. Maximum winds probably were 70-80 MPH.

Roof damage was done to buildings along first street east of General Welch Boulevard.

Empty semi trailers were blow over by a strong southwest wind east of Industrial Park Avenue between AirPark and First Streets

A small frame and metal building was blown apart by a strong south-southeast wind at the southeast corner of Third Street and General Welch Blvd. The building had a metal door facing south that failed when the wind hit. There was on obvious means of connection between the foundation and the sill plate, so the building lifted and disintegrated when the door failed.

Dumpsters were by a strong west-southwest wind at Liberal High School.
