Severe Storms Produce 60 to 80mph winds on August 12, 2011

Severe storms formed during the late afternoon Friday, August 12th across southwest Kansas.  The storms formed near a triple point where three different air masses were converging near a surface low close to Dodge City.  Higher than usual wind shear and instability by mid-August standards were adequate to sustain a long-lived cluster of severe storms.  The severe storms initiated across Hodgeman and Pawnee counties and organized as they moved southeast toward Kinsley.  Damaging winds developed near Kinsley and spread southeast toward Greensburg and Haviland.  The storms then expanded in areal coverage and the damaging winds expanded to include much of Pratt and eventually Barber counties.  70 to 80mph winds were common causing a myriad of damage from downed power poles and powerlines to minor structural damage in some cases.  The Medicine Lodge automated weather station recorded a 70 mph wind gust at 6:40pm. The map below shows the track of the damaging wind event across the southeastern portion of the Dodge City forecast area:

A radar image is shown below at around 6:30pm when the strongest winds were moving through Medicine Lodge.  The right panel shows the doppler wind velocities from the Vance Air Force Base radar to the southeast of Medicine Lodge.  The darker blue colors denote doppler velocities of 80 to 90 mph centered at a height about 3,000 feet above the ground:
