August 2011 Weather Summary for Dodge City

Temperatures were well above normal for August 2011 at the Dodge City Regional Airport.  This was the third hottest August on record with an average of 83.7 degrees, which was 5.6 degrees above normal.  There were a total of 17 days that were 100 degrees or higher.  As of August 31st, this brings the total number of 100 degree days this year to 52 which blew away the previous record of 42 days that was set in 1934!  There were a total of 9 record high temperatures that were set or tied.  The average high temperature for August was 99.3 degrees and the average low was 68.  The warmest temperature was 108 degrees on the 23rd and the coolest was 60 degrees on the 13th.  This summer was also the warmest on record with an average temperature of 83.5 degrees for the June through August period.  

August 2011 was the sixth driest on record with only 0.65 inches of precipitation recorded.  This was 2.10 inches below normal.  Since January 1st there has only been 4.60 inches of precipitation, which is 11.99 inches below normal.  At this time last year there was 22.36 inches of precipitation!  This is the driest start to a year since records have been kept.  The first full year of records was 1875.  The highest 24 hour amount was 0.25 inches on the 7th and 8th.  

The average wind speed for August was 10.6 mph.  The highest wind gust was 54 mph from the west on the 5th.
