September 2011 Weather Summary for Dodge City

Once again precipitation was well below normal at the Dodge City Regional Airport for September 2011.  A total of 0.54 inches of precipitation fell, which was 1.13 inches below normal.  Since January 1st there has only been 5.14 inches of precipitation, which was 13.12 inches below normal.  This continues to be the driest start to a year on record.  The 2nd driest year through the end of September was 1991 with 7.82 inches.  The highest 24 hour amount for September 2011 was 0.38 inches on the 16th and 17th.

For the first time since February temperatures were below normal for September.  The average temperature was 67.8 degrees, which was 1.4 degrees below normal.  The average high was 82.3 degrees and the average low was 53.2.  The first two days of the month were above 100 degrees, bringing the total of 100 degree days to 54.  The previous record for number of 100 degrees days in a year was 42 days in 1934.  The warmest day was on the 1st with a high of 107 degrees, which set an all-time high for September.  The coolest morning was the 30th with a low of 37 degrees.  A total of four record temperatures were set.  One high was set and another was tied.  The 1st saw a low of only 78 degrees which was a record.  On the 15th the high only reached 54 degrees and that was a record lowest maximum for the date.  

As of October 4th, there have been 102 days of 90 degrees or higher at Dodge City which is significantly above the previous record of 91 days.

The average wind speed for September was 11.5 mph.  The highest wind gust was 45 mph from the north on the 29th.

 With the September dryness, the water year (defined as October through September) was the driest on record at Dodge City and 13.66 inches below average!
