Weather observations have been taken at several locations across western Kansas for more than a century while many other sites have been recording weather data for many, many decades. The driest calendar year observed and recorded across western Kansas (so far) was in 1956 when only 4.77 inches of precipitation was measured at a location 11 miles ESE of Johnson in Stanton county.
