The National Weather Service is looking for a person with interest an in weather and the willingness to help collect daily temperature and precipitation data in the Larned area. Weather observations have been ongoing at this location since 1860. The program, known as the Cooperative Observation Program, comprises approximately 11,000 weather observers across the nation. Across southwest Kansas there are 53 locations within 27 counties that collect weather data on a daily basis. Some of these stations have been in the same family for over 100 years often being passed down through several generations. It is not difficult work and makes you the "Official" weather observer in Larned.
The Weather Service will provide all the equipment, supplies and training necessary to collect daily temperature and precipitation data. All you need is your willingness to collect weather information on a daily basis and a location to set up the equipment. The equipment comprises a temperature sensor with digital display unit and an eight inch standard rain gauge. The temperature sensor mounts on a 5 foot tall, 2 inch diameter pole while the digital display unit resides inside the house, garage or shed. The 8 inch rain gage is mounted on a metal stand in the yard. If you have a computer and an internet connection, we can provide a link that will allow you to send us your daily information and have it posted to NOAA Weather radio each morning you send it.
If you live in or within a couple of miles of Larned and have an interest in collecting weather data for us, or if you would like more information, please call either Jesse Lee or Duane Wolfe at the Dodge City Weather Office at (620)225-6514. We can answer any questions you might have and provide you with any additional information.
