March 2012 Weather Summary for Dodge City

March 2012 was the second warmest March on record for the Dodge City Regional Airport.  The average temperature was 54.2 degrees which was 9.8 degrees above normal.  The average high was 68.7 degrees and the average low was 39.7.  Four records were either set or tied during the month.  There was one for a high temperature and the other three were for the highest minimum temperature.  The highest temperature during the month was 84 degrees on the 16th which was a record for that date.  The lowest temperature was 19 degrees on the 3rd.  The last freezing temperature for the month was 29 degrees on the 10th.  The warmest March on record was in 1910 with an average of 55.8 degrees.

Precipitation was well above normal for March.  The total was 2.67 inches which was 1.08 inches above normal.  The highest 24 hour amount was 1.98 inches on the 21st.  The total precipitation for the year as of March 31st was 3.70 inches which was 0.85 inches above normal.  At this time last year Dodge City only had 1.33 inches of precipitation.  There was only a trace of snow for the month and that occurred during the early morning hours on the 8th.  The total snowfall for the 2011-12 season so far has been 7.7 inches.  This was 12.3 inches below normal.

The average wind speed was 13.4 mph.  The highest wind gust was 52 mph from the south on the 6th.
