April 2012 Weather Summary for Dodge City

April 2012 precipitation was well above normal for the Dodge City Regional Airport.  The total precipitation for the month was 3.44 inches which was 1.62 inches above normal.  This was the 20th wettest April on record.  The highest 24 hour amount was 1.30 inches on the 2nd and 3rd.  The total precipitation for the year through April 30th was 7.14 inches which was 2.47 inches above normal.  April makes three months in a row that precipitation has been above normal at Dodge City.  There was no snow during the month.  The total snowfall for the 2011-12 season was only 7.7 inches which was 13.4 inches below normal.  In fact, Dodge City has only had one day of measureable snow since January 1st and that was on February 7th with 1.2 inches!  If Dodge City does not receive measureable snow during the early part of May, the 2011-12 season will end up tied as the 14th least snowiest winter on record.  The least snowiest season was 1903-04 with only 0.2 inches.

The average temperature at Dodge City was 57.4 degrees which was 3.5 degrees above normal.  The average high temperature was 69.3 degrees and the average low was 45.5.  The highest temperature for the month was 93 degrees on the 24th and the lowest was 34 degrees on the 16th.  Two records were set during the month.  The first was a record high 89 degrees on the 1st.  The 2nd record also occurred on the 1st and was for a high minimum temperature of 59 degrees.  As of April 30th, the last freeze for Dodge City occurred on March 10th with a low of 29 degrees.

The average wind speed was 12.5 mph.  The highest wind gust was 51 mph from the northeast on the 2nd.
