July 2012 Weather Summary for Dodge City

July 2012 at the Dodge City Regional Airport ended up as the 11th warmest July on record.  The average temperature was 84.1 degrees which was 4.5 degrees above normal.  The average high was 98.6 degrees and the average low was 69.5.  The warmest temperature was 105 degrees on the 29th and the lowest was 58 on the 12th.  There were a total of 17 days that reached at least 100 degrees.  This brings the total for 2012 to 28 days.  As of July 31st, 2012  had the 7th highest number of 100 degree days in a year.  The highest number of days with at least 100 degrees was last year with 54 days.  Records for Dodge City date back to 1874.  No records were set or tied in July 2012. For the June and July period, 2012 was the 5th warmest on record with an average temperature of 81.7 degrees.  The warmest was 83.7 degrees in 1934.  This is also the warmest January through July period on record with an average of 59.6 degrees.  The last time Dodge City had below normal temperatures was December 2011.

The total precipitation for July 2012 was 1.92 inches which was 1.16 inches below normal. The highest 24 hour amount was 1.26 inches on the 9th.  The total precipitation since January 1st was 11.45 inches which was 2.39 inches below normal.  At this time last year Dodge City only had 3.95 inches. 

Wind speeds were not nearly as high as they were in June.  The average wind speed for July was 11.4 mph as compared to 15.1 mph in June.  The highest wind gust was 43 mph from the northeast on July 7th.
