August 2012 Weather Summary for Dodge City

Well above normal temperatures dominated the first eight days of August at the Dodge City Regional Airport before leveling off to below normal temperatures the remainder of the month.  The average for the month was 76.2 degrees which was 1.9 degrees below normal.  This was the third biggest temperature change (cooling) from July to August on record.  The difference from July to August was a decrease of 7.9 degrees!  The biggest change was 10 degrees in 1966.  The average high temperature for August 2012 was 91.3 degrees and the average low was 61.1.  The highest temperature during the month was 107 degrees on the first and the lowest was 52 degrees on the 5th and 19th.  One record high was set on the 1st and two record lows were set on the 5th and 17th.  A record low was tied on the 10th.  The total number of 100 degree days was five bringing the annual total to 33 days.  This is the 5th most on record.  For back to back years 2011 and 2012 had a combined 87 days!  The next closest back to back years were 1933 and 1934 with 63 days.  For the summer months of June, July and August the average temperature was 79.8 degrees which was 2.6 degrees above normal.  This was the 11th warmest on record.  For the January through August period, this year is still the warmest on record.  The average during this time period was 61.7 degrees.

The total precipitation for the month was 3.24 inches which was 0.49 inches above normal.  The highest 24 hour amount was 1.54 inches on the 24th and 25th.  For the June, July and August period the total was 6.94 inches which was 2.13 inches below normal.  Since January 1st the total precipitation was 14.69 inches which was 1.90 inches below normal.  At this time last year Dodge City only had 4.60 inches.

The average wind speed for the month was 10.7 mph.  The highest wind gust was 62 mph from the south which occurred on the 3rd from the strong to severe thunderstorms that moved through the area that evening.
