April Weather Summary for Dodge City

April 2007 at the Dodge City Regional Airport ended up below normal with an average temperature of 50.2 degrees, which was 3.7 degrees below normal.  With the exception of the first two days, the first half of the month was well below normal.  From April 4th to April 9th, the temperature did not get above 49 degrees.  A hard freeze occurred on the mornings of the 6th and 7th when the temperature dropped down to 22 and 21, respectively.   A record low maximum temperature was established on the 6th with a high of only 36 degrees, and also on the 13th with a high of 38.  For the month, the average maximum temperature was 61.1 degrees and the average minimum was 39.3. 

There was a total of 10 inches of snow that fell during the month and all of that occurred within a 24 hour period on the 13th and 14th.  A total of 9.8 inches fell on the 13th.  This was the 2nd highest snowfall total for the month of April with snowfall records dating back to 1885.  The highest snowfall for April was 14.3 inches in 1938.  

The total precipitation for the month was 1.46 inches, which was 0.79 inches below normal.  Most of that occurred on the 12th and 13th when there was 1.15 inches.  The total precipitation from January 1st through April 30th was 5.40 inches and that was 0.03 inches above normal.  Last year at this time, the total precipitation was only 1.91 inches. 

Even though it seemed windier, the average wind speed for the month was 13.6 mph.  The highest wind gust recorded was 45 mph and occurred on the 25th.  The amount of sunshine for April was 58 percent.
