Normal or Average?
In the first 14 days of November, there had not been any precipitation measured at Dodge City. Is this normal? Is it just an average November? Taking the precipitation for November from 1971 through 2000 (30 years)...the average precipitation for November is 1.01" at Dodge City. But it is rare for a November to actually have the monthly total of precipitation accumulate to near this average amount. Rather, it is NORMAL to have dry Novembers but then have a really wet month every so often. Look at the following graph...
So, based on the past 10 years, it’s "normal" to have a dry November with total precipitation of about a third of an inch or less, despite the 30 climatological "average" being around 1 inch.
