Is this the year for a White Christmas?

Have you been dreaming of a White Christmas?  As the hustle and bustle of last minute shopping and travel has begun this holiday season, many are left wondering, will snow cover the ground to add to the holiday celebrations?

Climatology would suggest the chance of seeing a snowflake or even snow on the ground on December 24 or December 25 is rather small.  Below is a chart of probabilities of snow falling and snow depth on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Christmas 2006

What will Christmas Day 2006 hold for Dodge City?  A major winter storm produced copious amounts of rain and freezing rain across the area on December 19 and 20.  Most of the snow with the system fell in Colorado and far western Kansas.  Snowfall of around 2 inches fell as close as Cimarron in Gray county and 4 inches in the panhandle of Finney county.  For Dodge City proper, the prospect for this year looks very slim for a white Christmas as there are no other major storms on the horizon.  There could be some very light snow or flurries Chirstmas eve but at this time the system expected does not appear strong enough to produce much.
