August Weather Summary for Dodge City

After a hot and dry start to summer, atmospheric changes took place across the High Plains about mid-July that allowed for cooler temperatures and beneficial rainfall to occur into mid-August.   After a 100 degree day on August 2nd that brought the number of 100 degree days to 18 at Dodge City, temperatures fell off rather dramatically as cold fronts and thunderstorms became more frequent.  The average daily temperature for August was 76.7 degrees or 1.4 degrees below normal.  However, the average daily temperature for the first 20 days of the month was 4.6 degrees below average and was the 13th coolest such period on record for Dodge City.  During the month the mercury failed to reach even 80 degrees on 4 days.  The lowest temperature during August was 56 degrees on the 10th.

Precipitation was much above normal for August at Dodge City as 6.92 inches was measured, which was 4.17 inches above normal.  Even though there was no measurable rainfall after the 14th, this August ended up as the 3rd wettest on record and was just shy of the record wettest August that occurred in 1977 when 7.44 inches fell at the airport in Dodge.  During the first 14 days of the month there was at least a trace of rain on 13 of those days.  In addition, the first 14 days of the month was the wettest start to August on record for Dodge City. A total of 6.92 inches of rain fell, eclipsing the previous record of 6.15 inches that occurred in 1915. Also noteworthy is that at the airport in Dodge City from July 16th through August 14th there was 9.44 inches of rain, which is the wettest equivalent period on record.  The previous record was 9.41 inches that fell from July 16th through August 14th of 1996.

August was less windy than average too!  Even though there was a 44 mph wind gust on the last day of the month at the airport, the average speed for August was 10.8 mph which was below the normal of 11.9 mph.  It is very interesting that the average wind for August has been above average just once in the past 18 years and that occurred in 2002!
