October Weather Summary for Dodge City

October weather was variable, as expected, as cold fronts became more frequent and several storm systems brought welcome rains and even snow! On average, measurable snow falls in Dodge City about once every six years. On October 18th measurable snow fell at many locations across southwest Kansas. At the airport in Dodge City there was 2.7 inches of snow which made this October the 7th snowiest on record. The snow did not last long though as the next day it had all melted by mid-morning.

Temperatures this past month ranged from a high of 91 degrees on the 3rd to 31 on the 19th at the Dodge City airport. The average temperature for the month was 55.3 degrees which was 1.3 degrees below normal. The only record occurred on the 18th as the high that day was only 42 degrees which was the coldest high temperature for that date (the previous record was 44).

Along with the snow, there were a few other episodes of rain and thunderstorms. Precipitation for the month at the Dodge City airport was 2.84 inches which was 1.10 inches above normal. The greatest amount was 1.60 inches which fell on the 28th.

The highest wind speed during October was 51 MPH at the airport and that occurred with a thunderstorm early on the 31st. The average for October was 13.2 MPH which was exactly normal.
