A State of Extremes. Yesterday's Temperatures

After a chilly weekend with patchy frost, the Midwest is once again reminded that the Northland is land of extremes.

A warm front lifted over the Northland and into southern Canada by Wednesday afternoon, allowing for the warm 80 and 90 degree readings to spread over the Western Great Lakes Region. However, the area of most interest was the western tip of Lake Superior where a stubborn marine air mass would not budge and kept temperatures in the 40s through the day along the north shore of Lake Superior to the Twin Ports and east to Port Wing, Wisconsin. The Duluth Airport set a new all time record high temperture with a reading of 88 F (a rise of 54 degrees from the morning low of 34 F). Meanwhile, a few miles away near the Duluth Lift Bridge the temperture was 47 F - a difference of over 40 degrees. However, the strong southerly winds and intense heat finally did take over to cool lake air. Just after 5 pm, the northeast wind at the Superior and Sky Harbor Airports finally switched out of the southwest, gusting over 40 mph, and soaring the temperature to around 90 F. The automated weather station at Sky Harbor Airport recorded a temperature change from 46 F to 87 F in just 20 minutes.

The previous day, Tuesday May 19th, was a day of records as well. Warmth blasted into southern and western Minnesota, while the northeast part of the state remained very cool.  A difference of greater than 60° existed across the state during Tuesday afternoon, with some record highs in south and west communities, including Minneapolis.  Even triple digits were reached at Granite Falls in southwest Minnesota. Residents of Minnesota saw both the coolest and warmest readings in the entire country on Tuesday.
