Warmer Than Normal Winter Forecast

The average Northland temperature of the coming winter is expected to be above normal, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center (CPC). Much of CPC's winter outlook is based on the fact that the current El Niño pattern in the South Pacific is expected to reach a moderate level this winter.

In the past fifteen El Niño winters, the average winter temperature at the Duluth Airport has been 2.9 degrees above normal and at International Falls the average temperature during an El Niño winter has been 1.6 degrees above normal.  There has been little correlation to average precipitation amounts.
