Heavy Rain Expected On Friday; Flood Watch For Part of the Area

A low pressure system is expected to move through the area on Friday, generating widespread rain and thunderstorms. Abundant moisture in the atmosphere, combined with very strong forcing for rising motion will contribute to the threat for heavy rainfall across parts of the area. Remember that the HPC Precipitation forecast is intended to forecast an average over an area, and rainfall totals are likely to be higher in locations that see more thunderstorm activity. Some of the thunderstorms on Friday could be strong, or even severe. Below are links to the latest outlooks from the Storm Prediction Center:

Finally, an areal Flood Watch has been issued for parts of the area due to the potential for heavy rainfall, combined with recent heavy rains across the area. Rivers, streams, and creeks are already running higher than they were earlier this summer, particularly in Pine and Carlton Counties in Minnesota, and into northwest Wisconsin.
