Through this winter National Weather Service Offices in the Dakotas and Minnesota, including Duluth, will issue an experimental extreme cold (EC) product as needed.

On occasion temperatures may fall to well below zero with a calm wind. Currently the only way to headline very cold temperatures is with the use of wind chill advisory or warning products. The experimental EC Warning product will be issed in the rare situations where air temperatures fall to dangerous levels but there is little to no wind occurring.

EC Warnings will be issued as non-precipitation weather products (NPW) and will use NWS valid time event code (VTEC) EC.W for dissemination.

Cold and wind chill threshold for northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin:

• Wind chill advisory:  Wind chills 25 below zero to 39 below.
• Wind chill warning:  Wind chills 40 below zero and colder.
• Extreme cold warning: Air temperature 40 below zero and lower with little or calm wind.
