Day 2: Winter Hazard Awareness Week- Prepare!
The National Weather Service reminds you to be prepared before winter storms strike.
Have flashlights and extra batteries, food and water, extra medications, first-aid supplies, and blankets for additional warmth. If you have an infant in the home, get extra diapers and other necessities. If you are running low on medication, consider filling your prescriptions before the storm arrives.
Be sure elderly neighbors or relatives and shut-ins are cared for during the storm. Check on them often, or even have them wait out the storm at your home- especially if there might be power outages. And power outages are a strong possibility during a winter storm.That is why you should have a supply of non-perishable foods.
Also- remember your pets and livestock. Ensure you have enough food on hand and provide water and shelter.
Before a storm make sure you have plenty of drinking water on hand. It is just as important to stay hydrated during the dry winter months as it is in the hot summer months. To help you plan on how much water to have on hand - there should be one gallon of water per person and pet per day.
