SUBJECT:  PROPOSED CHANGE IN FLOOD STAGE ON THE HURON RIVER IN
                     ANN ARBOR

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONDUCTED A FIELD SURVEY OF THE HURON
RIVER IN ANN ARBOR FROM ARGO DAM DOWNSTREAM TO GEDDES DAM ON JANUARY
11 2008. ON THAT DAY...THE RIVER CRESTED SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE OFFICIAL
FLOOD STAGE OF 15 FEET. FLOODING WAS LIMITED TO SOME PARK AND LOW
LANDS ALONG THE RIVER.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ISSUES RIVER FLOODING WARNING WHEN
RIVERS THREATEN LIFE AND PROPERTY. SINCE NO LIFE OR PROPERTY WAS
THREATENED...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FEELS THE OFFICIAL FLOOD
STAGE FOR WHICH IT WILL ISSUE A RIVER FLOOD WARNING FOR THE HURON
RIVER IN ANN ARBOR BE RAISED.

LEVELS WHERE RAN AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT RAISING THE FLOOD STAGE
TO 16 FEET WOULD ELIMINATE UNNECESSARY WARNINGS WHILE ERRING ON THE
CAUTIOUS SIDE AS LIFE AND PROPERTY WILL BECOME AFFECTED TOWARD A
STAGE OF 17 FEET.

IN THE MEANTIME...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL BEGIN ISSUING
RIVER FORECASTS WHEN THE RIVER IS FORECAST TO REACH OR EXCEED 13.5
FEET. THIS HAS BEEN LOWERED FROM A STAGE OF 15 FEET. THIS FORECAST
CAN BE VIEWED GRAPHICALLY ON THE "RIVERS AND LAKES AHPS" PAGE OF THE
WEATHER SERVICES HOMEPAGE AT WWW.WEATHER.GOV/DTX

IF NO REASONABLE OBJECTIONS ARE RECEIVED...THE STAGE WILL BE OFFICIALLY
RAISED BY THE END OF JULY.

ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS...PLEASE CONTACT HYDROLOGIST DANNY
COSTELLO AT 248-625-3309, X 493.
