NWS Detroit/Pontiac Open House August 29th

Twenty years ago the National Weather Service (NWS) offices in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Flint moved into our facility in White Lake, Michigan.  The NWS would like to invite you to celebrate those 20 years by attending our open house on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 from 2 PM to 7 PM.  This is the first open house we have had since 2006.  The following is the planned schedule of events:

  • Tour of the inside of the office. This includes a brief overview of our office and explanation of the various functions of the weather forecast office. A look at our computer system and what meteorologists look at to make a forecast. There will also be a radar demonstration of how severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings are issued.
  • Displays of various weather sensors and hydrologic and electronic equipment used in obtaining hydro-meteorological data.
  • The release of a weather balloon and explanation of the type of meteorological data received from them. Weather balloons will be released once every hour.
  • Representatives from Oakland County Homeland Security along with a response vehicle.
  • There will also be an activity center for children.

If severe weather is forecast or develops over Southeast Michigan, the Open House will be cancelled or end appropriately.  Please refer to the NWS Detroit/Pontiac web site, Facebook or Twitter for any updates.  Also, please remember that the NWS is a federal facility.  Therefore, backpacks or large bags are not permitted on the grounds of the National Weather Service for security purposes.

Our office address is 9200 White Lake Rd. White Lake, MI 48386
