January 17th Snowfall Totals

Early on the 17th, snow overspread much of eastern Iowa north of Highway 34 before eventually working into northwest Illinois. Very cold surface temperatures and good snow growth allowed quick accumulations of 1 to 2 inches across much of that area. However, this storm system was strong enough to pull in much warmer air aloft, with temperatures around 3,000 ft climbing above freezing. The warm air melted the falling snowflakes, but with sub-freezing air still near the surface this resulted in sleet or freezing rain. The freezing rain lasted the longest south of Highway 34, where as much as 1/8" of ice was reported. Elsewhere, ice accumulations generally amount to a light glazing on elevated and untreated surfaces. During the mid morning hours a second band of snowfall developed, and the intense precipitation rates helped to cool the air enough to remain all snow. This developed in earnest from Cedar Rapids and Iowa City on eastward, where it dissipated just west of the Quad Cities.

Thoughout the rest of the day temperatures remained cold enough for all snow along and north of Highway 20, while areas between there and Highway 34 had to deal with a mix of sleet and freezing rain. South of there, afternoon temperatures wamred above freezing, and a plain rain fell. By the evening, temperatures aloft had cooled off enough that areas north of Highway 34 changed back to snow, with additional accumulations around a dusting to as much as an inch.
