Preliminary Storm Damage Survey for July 11th.

A strong thunderstorm complex moved through East Central Iowa and Northern Illinois early Monday morning, July 11th.  Damaging winds in excess of 70 mph uprooted large trees, downed power lines, and ripped roofs off of buildings.  Areas heavily impacted by storms were in Northeastern Benton County, Northern Linn County, and Southern Delaware County.

On Monday a storm survey team assessed damage at Garrison and Vinton Iowa. On Tuesday July 12 the storm survey team will return to Benton, Linn, and Deleware counties to continue the damage assessment.

Preliminary assessment:

At Garrison Iowa: straight line wind of 110 to 130 mph produced widespread damage to structures. Many roofs were partially or fully removed and the walls of some buildings collapsed. Nearly every tree was significantly damaged or snapped off . Power outages were widespread.

At Vinton Iowa: straight line winds in excess of 110 mph caused significant power outages. Numerous structures sustained minor to moderate damage and most trees were significantly damaged or snapped off.

Vinton, IA  Public Library lost all trees and some windows.  View down 5th street from intersection of 5th and 2nd.  Hwy 218 on west side of town. Several large power poles down.
