Jan 12 Winter Storm - Snowfall Totals

After a day of sunshine and record highs in the lower and middle 50s on January 11, a strong polar cold front plowed through the region during the late afternoon and early evening hours.  Behind the front, strong northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph ushered sharply colder temperatures and snowfall into the area.  Snowfall totals across the area ranged between 2 and 6 inches, with higher amounts in northwest Illinois around 7.0".  The blustery northwest winds not only caused considerable blowing and drifting snow, but also made snow measuring very difficult.  Temperatures during the day on January 12 were mainly in the teens and lower 20s.  However, wind chill values were in the the single digits below zero, a far cry from the lower and middle 50s experienced only 18 to 24 hours earlier.
