...Much below normal temperatures and near normal precipitation characterized Kansas City weather in October...

 The average temperature at the Kansas City international airport was 50.6 degrees, which was 6.2 degrees below normal. The average high temperature was 58.9 degrees or 8.7 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 42.3 degrees which was 3.6 degrees below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 76 degrees on the 1st. The lowest temperature was 31 degrees on the 18th. This was the 3rd coldest October in Kansas City history. The coldest October was 1925 with an average monthly temperature of 47.5 degrees.

Precipitation came in at 3.66 inches for the month, or 0.33 inches above normal. The greatest total in a 24 hour period was 1.00 inches on the 21st through 22nd.

...Much below normal temperatures and slightly above normal precipitation characterized Saint Joseph weather in October...

At Saint Joseph, the average temperature was 48.9 degrees, which was 7.8 degrees below normal. The average high was 58.0 degrees which was 12.0 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 39.8 degrees which was 3.5 degrees below normal. The highest temperature was 72 degrees on the 19th. The lowest temperature was 28 degrees on the 18th.

 Precipitation at Saint Joseph was 4.25 inches, or 0.97 inches above normal. The greatest total in a 24 hour period was 2.25 inches on the 21st through the 22nd.

National and Regional Departures

Obviously, Kansas and Missouri have not been alone in experiencing much below average temperatures so far this month. Below is a graphic depicting the departure from normal temperatures and precipitation over the month of October. Much of the nation from the northern Rockies through central and southern Plains has been more than 10 degrees below average. If you wanted warmth, you could have headed to southern Texas, the Gulf Coast, or Florida; where temperature averaged 3-6 degrees above average.

Other Interesting Statistics:

Through October 2009, we experienced 6 days with high temperatures below 50 degrees.   Looking back through Kansas City observational history reveals that only 11 other years have recorded 5 or more days with high temperatures not reaching 50 degrees.  These years include:  2002 (10), 1926(10), 1976 (10), 1913(9), 1930(7), 1898(7), 1972(6), 1932(6), 1917(6) 1980 (5),  1908(5).

 We also experienced 4  record cold high temperatures in Kansas City.
