Another Colder than Normal Winter

 

Cold Temperatures?

 After the past few weeks, many of us are wondering where our typical winter warmups have been?  Well unbelievably, Kansas City typically experiences an average of 24 days with temperatures of 50 degrees or higher in a typical meteorological winter (DEC 1st - FEB 28th).  So far this winter, only 5 days of 50 degree or warmer temperatures have been recorded in the city.

December 2, 2010 - 53 Degrees
December 9, 2010 - 51 Degrees
December 10, 2010 - 59 Degrees
December 29, 2010 - 53 Degrees
December 30, 2010 - 68 Degrees

 

Expanding that statistic a little higher can be even more revealing.  On average, Kansas City will experience 7 days of  60+ degree temperatures in December, January, and February.  So far this meteorological winter we have experienced 1

 


When should we see warmer air?

The average first date of our first 50 degree reading is January 11th, and our average first 60 degree temperature is recorded around January 26!   While it doesn't appear likely that we will see any 50 or even 60 degree days for at least the next week and half, bear in mind that the month of February averages almost 9 days above 50 degrees and our average high temperature jumps from a cool 37 degrees on February 1st to a whopping 48 degrees by the 28th!
