...NORTH DAKOTA SEVERE WINTER WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK...DAY
TWO...WINTER FIRE SAFETY FACTS...

- RESIDENTIAL FIRES ACCOUNTED FOR AROUND 70 PERCENT OF ALL FIRE
     DEATHS.
- THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF FIRES IS TYPICALLY COOKING.  HEATING FIRES 
     IS THE NUMBER TWO CAUSE...AND ARSON COMES IN THIRD.
- MOST HEATING FIRES INVOLVE THE FIREPLACE OR CHIMNEY.
- A DRY CHRISTMAS TREE CAN BE CONSUMED BY FIRE IN AN INSTANT...
     WHILE GENERATING ENOUGH HEAT TO IGNITE THE ENTIRE ROOM.

SAFETY INFORMATION...
- TURN OFF PORTABLE HEATING APPLIANCES WHEN LEAVING THE HOME
     OR RETIRING FOR THE EVENING.
- HAVE AT LEAST THREE FEET OF CLEARANCE BETWEEN ANY HOME
     HEATING EQUIPMENT...AND ANYTHING THAT CAN BURN.
- HAVE CHIMNEYS AND FIREPLACES PROFESSIONALLY INSPECTED
     PRIOR TO THE START OF EVERY HEATING SEASON.
- USE A STURDY SCREEN OR GLASS CLOSURE IN FRONT OF YOUR
     FIREPLACE...AND BURN ONLY CLEAN FIREPLACE WOOD.
- MAKE SURE SMOKE DETECTORS ARE INSTALLED ON EVERY LEVEL OF
     YOUR HOME...INCLUDING YOUR BASEMENT.  TEST THEM MONTHLY.
- PLACE CHRISTMAS TREES WELL AWAY FROM HEAT SOURCES OR EXITS.
     WATER THE TREE DAILY.
