End of the Year Summary

...SUMMARY OF THE WEATHER YEAR 2006 FOR THE RED RIVER VALLEY...

PRELIMINARY INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE WEATHER YEAR 2006 WILL GO DOWN
IN THE RECORD BOOKS AS QUITE WARM OVERALL AND JUST A BIT TOO DRY
ACROSS THE RED RIVER VALLEY AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS OF EASTERN
NORTH DAKOTA AND NORTHWEST MINNESOTA.

WHICH IS 4.1 DEGREES ABOVE AVERAGE OVERALL AND THE THIRD WARMEST
ANNUAL AVERAGE ON RECORD (FARGO AIRPORT RECORDS GO BACK TO 1881).
GRAND FORKS AIRPORT TEMPERATURES AVERAGED 43.3 DEGREES FOR THE YEAR
WHICH IS AROUND 3.0 DEGREES ABOVE AVERAGE OVERALL AND THE SECOND
WARMEST ANNUAL AVERAGE ON RECORD (GRAND FORKS AIRPORT RECORDS GO
BACK TO 1941). MOST SIGNIFICANTLY THE JANUARY AND DECEMBER 2006
TEMPERATURES WERE BOTH WELL ABOVE AVERAGE (11 TO 18 DEGREES), THE
MID SUMMER TEMPERATURES WERE SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE, AND THE
SHOULDER SEASONS WERE AT OR ONLY SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL.

RAINFALLS IN THE LATE SUMMER WHICH HELPED LATE SEASON CROPS.

THE SPRING SEASON BROUGHT WIDESPREAD SNOWMELT FLOODING WHICH REACHED
THIRD HIGHEST LEVELS SINCE 1900, BASIN WIDE.

DURING THE SUMMER OF 2006 MUCH OF THE AREA ENTERED INTO MODERATE
DROUGHT CONDITIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 15 YEARS.

WHICH IS SOMEWHAT ABOVE AVERAGE, THOUGH WINTER SEASON PRECIPITATION
WAS VERY NEAR NORMAL. SNOWFALL FOR THE YEAR IN THE FARGO AREA WAS
ONLY 24.9 INCHES WHICH IS SIGNIFICANTLY BELOW SEASONAL NORMALS,
THOUGH WINTER SEASON PRECIPITATION WAS ALSO VERY NEAR NORMAL.
