On Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 10am until 3 pm, the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, ND will host an open house open to everyone. We are located at 4797 Technology Circle, Grand Forks, ND 58203, just south of University Avenue to the west of Interstate 29. The main parking area will be at the USDA building just south of the NWS. Restrooms will be available at the Grand Forks Parks District building to the west of the NWS.
The Salvation Army will have the food canteen available, and the Red Cross, UND/AMS and the Northwood City Administrator, Marcy Douglas will also be present. The Grand Forks Base Weather Unit will have a mobile weather unit to demonstrate how weather observations are made in the field. In addition, two storm chasers will be on hand to explain how they chase tornadoes!
Your NWS in Grand Forks will have many displays and demonstrations explaining what we do on a daily basis to protect you, our citizens! We will explain how tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings are issued, how we issue forecasts with our gridded database, how data is disseminated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You’ll learn how our radar functions and where it is located. We will answer the important question, what is a NOAA Weather Radio and how can you get one. Many other poster displays will show the components that make up a National Weather Service Office, in addition to other entities that play an important role in our mission, saving lives and protecting our citizens!
Lastly, several free drawings will be held and a weather radio and/or a rain gauge can be won!
We look forward to meeting you in September, so keep your calendars open and spread the word!
