December 2008 climate stats for Fargo and Grand Forks

 

The following statistics are for Fargo and Grand Forks.  Statistics and rankings of temperature and snowfall for other sites are not available at this time.

 For Temperature:

The average monthly temperature for December 2008 at the Grand Forks International Airport (GFK) was 1.6 degrees.  This is fourth coldest December on record.  The top 5 coldest Decembers are (with records back to 1941)

1. minus 0.5 degrees in 2000

2. 0.0 degrees in 1983

3. 1.3 degrees in 1985

** 4. 1.6 degrees in 2008 **

5. 2.7 degrees in 1967

The average monthly temperature for NWS/UND site in Grand Forks was 2.1 degrees.  A preliminary check of temperature data back to 1893 shows unofficially this would rank as the 8th coldest December on record for NWS/UND climatological station. 

The average monthly temperature for December at Fargo Hector International Airport was 5.9 degrees.  This was not cold enough to make into the top 10. Record data for Fargo go back to 1881.

 

For Snowfall:

The NWS/UND site in Grand Forks officially recorded 30.1 inches of snow. This is a new record snowfall for the month of December, breaking the old record of 27.6 inches set back in 1918.  December 2008 will rank second in all time monthly snowfall exceeded by 31.5 inches recorded in January 1989.

The Grand Forks International Airport (GFK) recorded 26.7 inches of snow in December.  Snowfall records for GFK are not available as the official snow reporting site for the city is the NWS/UND climatology station.

Fargo/Moorhead officially recorded 33.5 inches of snow. This is a new record snowfall for the month of December, breaking the old record of 29.2 inches set back in 1927.  This is the also the all-time record for highest in any month.
