Heavy Rains Tuesday Night Lead to River Flooding

A slow moving band of strong thunderstorms produced localized heavy rains over portions of the Red River Valley late Tuesday June 16th into the early morning June 17th. A broad area of 1 to 3 inches fell from the North/South Dakota border south of Valley City near Havana, stretching through the Wahpeton/Breckinridge area to near Barnesville Minnesota. Within this area, locally heavy amounts up to 7 inches were reported in the Kent Minnesota and Abercrombie North Dakota areas. Reports of flooded streets, state, county and municipals roadways as well as flooded basements were unfortunately common in this area. This is basically the same storm system that flooded the Bismarck/Mandan areas the night before.

In addition to the overland flooding, several river forecast points are forecast to reach or exceed flood stage. For the latest forecasts please visit the NWS AHPS web page here.

Below is a graphic of the Mayville RADAR estimated precipitation, which did an overall good job of pinpointing the excessive rain areas. Below that is a table of the rain totals through 8 am Wednesday morning.
