Excessive Rainfall Causes Overland and River Flooding

An almost summertime air mass moved into the northern plains on Monday May 24th, and interacted with a powerful late spring storm system. The result was widespread shower and thunderstorm activity, much of which produced heavy rainfall. Some areas of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota received 2 to 4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts. The highest reported value in eastern North Dakota was 3.69 inches in Colgate, while the highest reported in northwest Minnesota was 4.74 inches near Highlanding. Unofficial and Doppler RADAR estimates support the idea that some areas certainly did get more. Although we do not have official reports to this affect, as of this Tuesday morning, isolated rainfall totals of 6 or 7 inches are quite possible.

As a result of the heavy rainfall some area river have risen to or will reach flood stage, while many rivers will see moderate within bank rises. Also, overland flooding is reported in some portions of northwest Minensota, and many counties in the region have reported damage to secondary roadways due to the excessive rain.
