Excessive Rains Cause Flooding in Lakes Country

A series of slow moving thunderstorms pummeled much of the Lakes Country of west central and northwest Minnesota the evening of Saturday July 3rd. Based on reports from NWS Cooperative Weather Observers, Minnesota DNR, CoCoRaHS observers and public reports, upwards of 6 inches of rain fell in some areas. The hardest hit region seems to have been from the Detroit Lakes area eastward through Frazee, Snellman, Osage and the Park Rapids area. There had been reports of some roads covered in water, basements flooded, as well as agricultural and other rural damage.

Below is a graphic based on WSR-88D estimates, as well as a table of observed rainfall totals through 7am Sunday July 4th. Observed rainfall amounts, where available, are plotted on the image. When comparing the observed rain totals with RADAR estimates, it looks as though the estimated precipitation for the event was relatively accurate.
